Discuss with reference to your own experience of contemporary media.

In this essay it will discuss the internet as cyberspace has been a part of our contemporary culture for some time. Also this essay will look at the concept of cyberspace and if it still relevant to our contemporary society. Throughout this essay I will discuss with reference to my own experience with contemporary media.

The relevance between internets as cyberspace is still relevant to today contemporary society as it is more of a cyber world than ever before. Cyberspace basically is a world created by technology of electronic communication, only in the last six or so years has cyberspace become really popular. Once remarked by Peter Berger that history is seldom surprise and the assumption of those people who lived before Renaissance were unable to see it coming (Mike Featherstone, 1995). The effect of cyberspace and the society at the moments has been very impactful; nowadays cyberspace has evolved from just being a data source and communication source. Nowadays the internet is used for socializing with social networking site like myspace, facebook and twitter as well as a source of entertainment with site like youtube and other various site for people to watch US television and movies before they are released in Australia and other countries.

Not just as a technological artifact it provides our contemporary society a sit that allows you to explore “the world”. Another particular interest about “cyberspace” is no longer strictly refers to the fiction but “Cyberspace” has entered into today’s society as common speech no longer as that out there phrase but the simple meaning of internet today which is basically a world in its own entity (Nunes, 1995). Not only is cyberspace current for today’s society for its social networking advance but it’s also a great source of different technology. (Harasim, 1993) My personal experience with the cyberspace has shown how current as ever it’s been. To be able to have all your friends on facebook and be able to talk and see picture of them and of you is an amazing technological advance, however that’s not the only reason for me personally that the term cyberspace is as current as ever not only for social networking site and 3D environments and instant messaging programs but for the online sources it offers.

It has been predicted by the end of next one hundred years incomplete scholarly work will be a result of written text alone. If the internet keeps advancing the way it has been libraries won’t exist in person, they will exist over cyberspace. These cyberspace libraries will contain all electronically stored information that is publicly accessible by the public. Research assignments will change to see how well people are able to work their way around cyberspace.  The teaching way will have a whole range of new issues concerning students and teachers. With the technological advances of cyberspace and with machines they might be able to create robots that can be controlled by one teacher at home and they can put their days teaching into the robot via the internet. Not only the that cyberspace has created at the moment but eventually future generations will be able to travel back in time and see what 1834 Egypt was like and so on. This could be a big pro towards future educational advances or big con towards the cyberspace advances. (Lemke, 1993)

The internet (cyberspace) was first created in the 1960’s and it has become a global phenomenon and has connected 30 – 40 million people. The social links that have formed due to cyberspace such as; email, instant messaging programs like msn and most recently and most popular social networking sites. Another aspect of cyberspace that is personal relationships that form while two people start talking online, there are many debates to how human relationships can form on facebook and or 3D networking sites. Then it makes you think how often does person relationships form over the internet as well as how do u know the person that relationship is with is not a murderer or rapist. Then you look at all those tragic stories of people getting killed by meeting up with there internet lover who they thought were safe but obviously not. (Parks, 1996) However will all the technology nowadays some people can have a safe cyber relationship.

If I’ve discovered anything throughout doing this essay is that cyberspace is definitely still current with today’s contemporary society. With all the social networking website that allows millions of people to connect with each and form friendship. Also the 3D environments like world of world of war craft also known as WOW, allows gamers to socialize with people, so instead of being anti social while gaming you can meet new or people you already know. If anything that I’ve discovered throughout writing this essay and researching for it is that I don’t know why the internet as cyberspace was from the beginning of its creation. But the internet has only become a “cyberspace” in the last few years thanks to social networking sites like facebook and gaming programs like WOW. Before when the internet was just for researching and emailing I personally wouldn’t have referred to as cyberspace but nowadays with the internet and how it today with all these new programs being developed it’d make sense to refer to it as cyberspace. I think the concept of referring to internet as cyberspace will be around for a very long time and still remain current.
